Let
the area inside a circle represent the knowledge of the human race today.
The circumference of the circle is then a representation of the questions
we are trying to answer. Put another way, the circumference of the "circle
of knowledge" is a measure of the ignorance of the human race. More interestingly,
the area outside the circle represents the knowledge we don't know we
don't have : It is the ignorance of ignorance.
With the passage of time, we learn more and the circle of knowledge grows.
However, with every little bit of knowledge that we gain (or the discoveries
we make) comes a whole new world of questions and puzzles that we did
not even think of before. This is the beauty of knowledge. It is not linear.
It is a chain reaction where an answer to one question leads to millions
of other questions. That is something to rejoice - for what fun would
the world be if there was nothing more left to know.
However, if increasing our knowledge, creates ever-more unanswered questions,
does this mean, that we, as humans, can never reach the ultimate goal
of knowing everything? I don't know the answer to that but maybe the approach
that science has taken today will not lead us to our ultimate goal. Scientists
have realized today that there are limits to what the human body and the
senses can do. But is there a limit to what the human brain can achieve
too? The brain too is after all a physical entity. Maybe the first step
in reaching the goal of ultimate knowledge is realizing this.
Universe
is not only queerer than we think, it is queerer than we can think.
